WORD Poems

Since we are beginning our new school year with Rocket Writes a Story (and we all know that Rocket LOVES words!), I thought it might be a good idea to read a poems about…WORDS!

Look out how you use proud words,
When you let proud words go, it is not easy to call them back.

They wear long boots, hard boots; they walk off proud; they can’t hear you calling—‘
Look out how you use proud words.

by Carl Sandburg

  • Proverbs 6 talks about things that God hates.  What are the first words of verse 17?
Do you know what the word “haughty” means?
  • Name two ways that “proud words” are personified in this poem.
  • Why do you think the author used “long boots, hard boots” instead of say, slippers?
  • Do you know what the word “primer” means?   It means something that is important to learn.
Why do you think this poem is entitled, Primer Lesson?
